FAQ's
What is the mission of WBMD?
There are four priorities for mission:
- Multiply congregational effectiveness by fostering partnerships, sharing resources and providing a communications focal point.
- Help youth realize potential (academically, socially, spiritually) and grow
in a community of faith.
- Strengthen the impact district congregations make in providing for
those in need.
- Provide opportunities for individuals to experience fellowship through
service beyond their congregations.
How are these priorities for Mission carried out?
The WBMD staff works with district Pastors and many volunteers, initiating programs as well as providing support in various ways.
How is the WBMD staffed?

Mission Associate – Richard Kleinsmith

And many, many volunteers!
Who oversees the WBMD?
The WBMD staff is overseen by a 12 person Council, consisting of Pastors and Laity within the District, elected at the District’s Spring Assembly (usually held in May). Council members serve three-year terms. Current leadership includes:

How is the WBMD supported?
Primarily through benevolence contributions from the 45 district congregations (separate from benevolence to the Synod).
How do Mission Districts relate to Synods?
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is divided into 65 synods
nationwide. Mission districts (also known as “conferences” in some locations)
are divisions of their respective synod. There are 9 mission districts in the Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod. The by-laws of the NEPS define these districts, whose purpose is to “foster interdependent relationships among congregations, institutions, and synodical and churchwide units for mission purposes”. Districts are required to elect a Dean and Secretary, and may have an operating budget.
